How Do Oil-Filled Radiators Work?
If you don`t want to jump on costs let’s take a look at how oil radiators work. The oil inside the radiator is heated up by an electric. The oil retains the heat and releases it slowly into the surrounding air which means that even when the radiator is turned off it will continue to emit heat for some time as this is the biggest advantage of oil radiator. This makes oil-filled radiators an efficient way to heat a room especially if you use a timer to turn them off when you don’t need them.
How Much Energy Does an Oil-Filled Radiator Use?
The amount of energy that an oil-filled radiator uses will depend on its wattage. Generally, the higher the wattage, the more energy the radiator will use. Oil-filled radiators come in a range of wattages, from 500 watts to 2000 watts.
Average Running Costs
To give you an idea of the costs involved I’ve put together some average running costs per hour for different wattages:
(These are UK prices as in 2023; I will update the prices as they change. In the UK, price caps are adjusted every three months by a government body but prices are normally astronomical now!)
For a 500-watt oil-filled radiator, the average running cost per hour is around £0.10
For a 600-watt oil-filled radiator, the average running cost per hour is around £0.12.
For a 1000-watt oil-filled radiator, the average running cost per hour is around £0.22
For a 1500-watt oil-filled radiator, the average running cost per hour is around £0.32
For a 2000-watt oil-filled radiator, the average running cost per hour is around £0.41
Please note that these figures are based on the average thermostat on and off per hour.
If you want to calculate the cost of running nonstop for a full hour, it is still, on average, 40% higher than the previously mentioned rate. For instance, if the average running cost is £0.10, operating it nonstop for a full hour would cost £0.14 per hour
Your actual running costs may vary depending on how frequently you use the radiator and how high you set the thermostat.

Factors That Affect Running Costs
There are somel factors that can affect the running costs of an oil filled radiator like;
But don`t worry! Above calculations are included! However know and consider;
– The wattage of the radiator
– The frequency of use
– The duration of use
– The size of the room
– The temperature outside
– The current energy prices
Tips for Reducing Your Energy Bill
If you’re looking for ways to reduce your energy bill there are s a few things you can do:
But again my personal experience; Biggest factor is your curtains! If you use thermal curtains you will definitely feel the difference from the first minute!
– Use a timer to turn your radiator off when you don’t need it.
– Set the thermostat to a lower temperature to reduce energy usage.
– Only heat the rooms you’re using and keep doors closed to prevent heat escaping and of course curtains!
– Use a draught excluder to prevent cold air entering the room
– Make sure your home is properly insulated to prevent heat loss. This is a bit tricky but if you don`t have money to do it just follow above common tips.
Oil filled radiators are an efficient way to heat a room but their running costs also depends their setting. The average running costs per hour for a 500-watt oil-filled radiator is around £0.10 and the costs increase with the wattage of the radiator. Thankfully most oil radiators have power or theormostat settings so you can keep this under control. Remember keep the thermostat and power setting low (you will still warm up your space no worries) if you have high wattage oil radiators.
